Some stars follow the path of wisdom and restraint—building sustainable brands, getting credible endorsements, and engaging themselves with uplifting courses—others manage to rumba with controversy ever so often; they are stuck on the mud path, kicking up dust that messes up the ultimate perception they desire. When it comes to re-building bad reputation, it would demand more than what it took to create it in the first place. But there’s hope. If Robert Downey Jr could do it, so can you!

Bad Behaviour 1: Sleeping around

It is just one of those extra-curricular activities that can make a mockery of all your hard work. It may sound self-righteous but really, don’t sleep-around! You are not trying to be perfect, but you are trying to earn some respect. The fastest way to earn respect is to keep your legs together OR your zippers up. If at all you think you deserve a notorious and active sex life (which I believe every adult who desires it is entitled to), take it away from your industry – date the banker, the Engineer, the doctor, NOT your colleagues; and definitely not a bunch of guys/girls who roll in your “clique”. The news will leave your circle and settle on our (the public) laps; and we (the public) will drag you into the septic tank! And no matter what you say on twitter; how you try to make us see that you are a good girl/guy and sweet and naïve, our noses will be stuck in the air. It’ll take a lifetime to get that image of you and the many sex partners we’ve heard of (real and imagined) out of our heads. There-on, all your efforts will be summarised in only a few words – “S/he must have slept her/his way to that endorsement or that show or that award…” Sex is good – but it is never that deep.

Fix it: When the rumours start to feast on your career, take a break – away from the public, away from twitter (you have nothing to prove, we can tell you are hurting even through those: “wow! My life is so good. Thank you Lord” tweets). Retreat into your shell; find some support from family and true friends. Take a year off, if you must. Do not honour any red-carpet events, do not force a smile on the pages of tabloids, just disappear…and re-appear with a damn good single and a smashing video, OR a good movie with one of your best performances ever, OR a perfect red carpet moment with a slimmer/more beautiful you – depending on the specific industry you represent. Our focus will be altered. As a rule, a better, more interesting incident devours the lesser one. From then on, do not stop – keep going. You’ll have to work really hard to keep up with your less controversial colleagues, that is your cross to carry – carry it with grace. In no time, your sexual romp will be one of those unintended mentions that never fit in – ever again. But be careful, your come-back has to come with a bang! If you do yourself the injustice of releasing a wacky song or shoddy Nollywood flick after the long wait hoping to kill the bad reputation, it will only drag you further into oblivion.

Bad Behaviour 2: Fighting the Press

It’s futile. You come out looking stupid – always. If you are hurt with what is being said about you it is still never a good idea to engage in a twitter back-and-forth rage with a journalist, blogger or writer. Your public persona will be mocked. The whole exercise will drain the life of you. Every journalist, like every actor/musician/comedian etc is looking for that one big hit – one story – that will make him the biggest business in town. Sometimes journalists stretch the truth, ignoring how much the exaggeration can damage a brand. But it happens everywhere in the world. My grouse is when a celebrity takes it deeper into the gutters. You are more likely to be hurt by it eventually even when it is difficult to ignore sometimes.

Fix it: There’s something reverential about silence. If someone is naked on the balcony screaming and throwing foul words at you and you disregard the brewing session, play the bigger person and walk away, the gratification that comes from such a reaction cannot be quantified! So my first fix-it measure would be to ignore the rant. If you have to speak then speak through your publicist. It’s more honourable and professional. But if it kills you deep inside, then go to court. But don’t be the toothless bulldog that spends so much time trying to prove a point on social network with no concrete plan on how to rectify the damage.

Wonders they say shall never end. This would best describe the act of a 45-year-old father, Faseyi Adebayo who had canal knowledge of his17-year-old daughter Bisola Adebayo, and eventually put her in the family way.

The incestuous act, which, took place at No. 31 Idowu Close, in Alimosho area has landed the ‘husband-father’ in police cell at Afonka Police Station while the partner-in-sin daughter is currently parading about with protruding stomach. Narrating her ordeal to the police, the daughter, Bisola, an only child, avowed that her father had been having carnal knowledge of her since she was 14 years old, when she lost her mother in early 2008. Her father, she alleged, took advantage of her mother’s demise to sleep with her.

Admitting his obnoxious action, Faseyi claimed that the devil used his daughter to tempt and trap him. According to the widower, his daughter had ignorantly lured him with her nakedness since the demise of her mother, arguing that most times, his daughter sleeps naked on the same bed with him in their one-room apartment. “Sometimes, she would even undress herself fully naked before me, all in the name of changing clothes”, he confessed.

Meanwhile the IPO in charge of the case said, Faseyi would be charged to court as soon as investigations are completed on the matter. Describing the matter as complicated, another police source wondered on the punishment to be melted on Bisola for not speaking out until pregnancy resulted. ‘Is that not a crime also”, he asked this declared.

According to Nigeriafilms.com,Star actor Segun Arinze is in at the centre of a growing controversy.

The outgoing president of the Actors` Guild of Nigeria, AGN, is accused of being the father of a 10 years old girl (he does not associate with).

We learnt the alleged love child is a product of one night stand.

Amara Obiefuna, young lady said to be in her late twenties claimed Segun Arinze is the father of her child.

According to Enquirer, Segun had been invited to a movie location in Enugu where Amara lives with her parents. Like every normal human being, Segun we gathered had been so randy on this fateful day and had seen the young lady who was an undergraduate of the University of Calabar. And before you could say Jack Robinson, the actor had swept the young lady off her feet and the wrestling bout that ensued on that day is the product of the innocent little girl who has been denied fatherly love and care.

Further findings revealed that the alleged love child is Segun’s carbon copy but he has refused to be financially or emotionally committed to her upkeep.

Amara was quoted to have said he`s a very mean person, he switched off the phone he gave me after our first meeting and I`ve also met him where we discussed the issue of the pregnancy

An Accra High Court has sentenced a secondhand clothes dealer to 15 years imprisonment in hard labour for robbing and indecently assaulting a waitress of a hotel in Accra.
The accused person, James Adjei, robbed the complainant and inserted his fingers into her vagina, when his attempt to rape her failed, as a result of erectile dysfunction.

Adjei, who was charged with the driver of a taxi cab, currently at large, pleaded not guilty to the charges of conspiracy, robbery and indecent assault, however, the court, presided over by Justice C.A. Wilsoon, pronounced a verdict of guilty on him.

According to the court, the prosecution had discharged its onus of proving the guilt of the accused person beyond all reasonable doubt.

He was, therefore, convicted to 12 years imprisonment each on the count of conspiracy and robbery, to run concurrently, and a further three years imprisonment on the count of indecent assault.

It was the evidence of the complaint that shortly after taking off, the accused person ordered her to lie prostrate in the car after they had driven a distance away to a secluded place, and that she was unable to resist effectively, because the accused person had pulled out and pointed a knife at her waist, as he pulled her out of the vehicle, kicked her onto the ground, and poured the contents of her handbag into the vehicle, the court indicated.

“She further testified that the accused person pointed a knife at her while she lay on the ground, and demanded a sexual somehow paranoid and frightened, gave in, but the accused person could not attain an erection, so he inserted his finger into her vagina,” the court pointed out.

The complainant, who boarded a taxi cab with the accused person seated at the back passenger seat, felt paranoid and didn’t resist when the accused person threatened her with a knife around his waist, after she was driven to a secluded place at Nungua, a suburb of Accra.

The complainant, a few months later, she spotted the accused person at the premises of a hotel, identified him as the one who robbed and tried to rape her, confronted him, and asked: “do you know me?”

The accused then became upset and tried to sneak out of the premises of the hotel, but the complainant raised an alarm, leading to his arrest by security officers of the hotel, the court noted.

However, in his defense, the convict indicated that he went to the hotel on his itinerary rounds to sell, but decided to pass water, so he asked the complaint, who was a waitress of the hotel, to direct him to the washroom.

It was there and then that the complainant called the security guards to arrest him, and further denied being scared of the presence of the security men, the court noted.
The court noted that the assertion of the defense that the complainant failed to report the matter to the police until seven months later, could not be grounded in law.
“There is, however, no rule of law that people who are victims of trauma will behave, some would make an immediate complaint, and some would delay in disclosing the abuse, while others would not disclose the abuse at all. Reasons for the delay may include embarrassment, fear or guilt. A delay in disclosure standing alone will never give rise to an adverse inference against the credibility of the complainant,” the court emphasized.

Father and daughter agree to committing incest that produced a baby boy. But while father says act was consensual, daughter claims she was hypnotised.

For 24 years, Zina didn’t know her biological father. As a growing child, she had repeatedly been told by her mother that her father was in Jos, Plateau State, then in Lagos.
Unable to withstand the resultant mockery from friends and classmates, Zina demanded to be taken to her father, sometimes refusing to eat for days.

At last, her demand of several years was granted two years ago, when she was taken to her father in Amuwo Odofin area of Lagos.Today, Zina is 26 year-old. But, unfortunately, she is enmeshed in an abominable act which stigma is likely to remain with her for the rest of her life. Reason? She claims to have a ten-month old son whose father is no other person than her father (names withheld).

Zina alleged that her father was the first man to have carnal knowledge of her. Asked how that was possible, she claimed her father usually hypnotized her anytime he wanted to sleep with her.

The suspected victim of incest narrated: “ I demanded to know my father and also to stay with him so that I could do something better with my life. I thought, when I got to his place, he would fix me into a skilled job.

“But when I got there, it was another ball game altogether. It all started with his over-monitoring nature. Anytime I went to my place of work, my father would come and check if I was there or if any man came to visit me. I thought it was just this fatherly protective measure for their daughters.

Then one day, he gave me some concoction at night, saying it was for malaria . But after I took it, I did not know where I was and, before I knew it, I slept off and, when I woke up , I discovered I was naked and was bleeding. This continued several times.”

Asked if she told anybody, Zina replied, “ I did not tell anybody that first time because he threatened to send me back to my mother if I did. He continued that way until I became pregnant. Even when I was pregnant, I never knew.

It started from being dizzy and when I complained, he gave me some drugs to take,which made my stomach rumble for days. When I could not bear the pain any longer, I had to contact someone who in turn contacted my mother”.

On arrival, her mother was said to have taken her to hospital where tests were carried out on her and results showed she was six months pregnant. The 39-year-old mother of the girl, Rose Nwogugu, was devastated.

Zina remained with her father in that state until she gave birth to a male child who has striking resemblance with his grandfather. Lack of care for both the nursing mother and her child reportedly prompted Nwogugu, mother of the incest victim, to alert the police who arrested the father.

“What have I done to deserve all these?”, Zina’s mother asked Sunday Vanguard. rhetorically. Information showed that the single mother had suffered several misfortunes in life. First was the pregnancy that produced Zina, twenty -six years ago, when she was barely 13 years.

She was reportedly impregnated while in form two. Then, the man responsible (Zina’s father) was a trader in Jos. The pregnancy distorted her education, as her furious parents refused giving her out in marriage, on the grounds that she must finish her secondary education first.

Looking back with regret, Nwogugu said” “This man (pointing to the father of her child) has put me into so much trouble. Part of it is that I have not been able to marry since then. He got me impregnated when I knew nothing about life.

Even at that , he never bothered to check on his daughter. I reluctantly took my daughter to him so that he could at least play his fatherly role on her. I never knew it would turn out this way. I came to check on her when I heard he was not taking care of her only for me to discover that my daughter had been impregnated by her own father”.

On why he decided to sleep with his daughter in the first place, the suspect blamed it on spiritual forces beyond his control.

“If I tell you it has got more to do with spiritual forces, you may not believe me . But it is true. This spiritual thing is true. I was cursed by one of my uncles without any fault of mine. He placed a curse on me that I will never do well in life.

Since then, anytime I have money at hand, it will just disappear. I have been going from pillar to post all these years, struggling to make ends meet but no way. Look at me, is it proper for a man my age to be unmarried? Eh- hen, that is what I am saying. This thing happening to me is not ordinary.”

On why he chose his daughter instead of a female friend, he said, “I do not have a girl friend. It all started when she started telling people that I am not her father. When her mother brought her to me in 2009, I could not take care of her because I was poor. I could not feed myself, let alone another person. It is not that I never had plans for her but things were tight for me, that I had to take her to my elder sister’s place. But she later brought her back saying my daughter had some problem.

I then got a place at Mile Two park where she could be managing in a restaurant. While there, she kept telling people that I was not her father. Out of annoyance, I took her away from there and got her another place, yet the case was the same.

At a point I begged her to stop denying me before the world but she would not stop. Then I removed her from there and made her to stay at home with me for four months before I took her to learn fashion designing where she repeated same thing”

Asked how he got his daughter’s consent in the atrocious act, he said, “It happened one night. I did not tell her anything. I only crept to her and started fondling her. She did not put up any resistance; so I had carnal knowledge of her. This continued until her mother came to inform me she was pregnant. She never told me she was pregnant. I could not also deny it because when the baby was born he looked very much like me.

“I did not hypnotize her as she claimed. The only concoction I gave to her was for malaria because there are lots of mosquitoes where we lived and I did not want her to suffer from malaria. Her claim that I am the first man in his life is also a big lie. This is because she was not a virgin when I slept with her. I am an adult and I know how it feels like with a virgin.”

Asked whether he felt any remorse the first time he slept with his daughter, he shook his head and said, “ remorse? no. There was nothing like that. It was just like any other girl”.

On what he wanted to do with the product of the pregnancy, he remained calm refusing to talk. Even when he was asked what the name of the child was, he directed this writer to her daughter.

Meanwhile, 10-month old baby clung to her mother , crying and struggling at the same time to remove her blouse in an attempt to reach out for her breast. Unknown to this innocent child, an abominable incident capable of stigmatizing his image, had occurred.

A married woman had s*x with a 15-year-old schoolboy in her car after enticing him by flashing flashing her breasts on the internet.

Susan Millman, 47, used a webcam to try and tempt other teenage boys by promising them sex in video shows online.
Millman, from Grimsby, whose husband runs a coach company, has now been jailed for 18 months after admitting two offenses of causing the teenage boy to engage in s*x with her in her Jeep.

Grimsby Crown Court also banned her from working with children for life and ordered to sign on the S*x Offenders’ Register for 10 years.

Photographs of her appeared on a social networking site and were viewed by teenagers. Police became aware when an adult was informed and the victim was interviewed.

Prosecuting barrister James Byatt said Millman’s initial contact with the youth was on Facebook and was of a friendly nature prior to the two offences between September and November 2010 and January and March 2011.

He said: ‘She took a caring attitude and he confided in her. He felt he could unburden himself and they had hugs. After rows with his mother he felt he could go to confide in her.

Millman met the boy on one occasion. Mr Byatt added: “The nature of the communication changed and it became more s*xual. She would comment on his good looks.

“There was a message for him on Facebook every day and texts of a sexual nature were sent. There were so many he asked her to stop it when he was at school.”

Mr Byatt gave details of the first sexual encounter when she picked him up in her Jeep. On another occasion he climbed out of his bedroom window and again she picked him up in the Jeep in which they had intercourse.

Detectives later discovered evidence on a webcam of her revealing herself and making provocative statements to one of the boys. She was arrested on May 24 and told police the contact had not been sexual – just kisses.

She told police: “He is chatty and bubbly, just like me.” Mr Byatt said the youth could not consent to having sex and she should have been aware of his emotional development.

Having had contact with his mother in the past, she ought to have realised the boy’s vulnerable state, he said.

In a statement on the impact on her son, his mother said there had been upset and he was “more insecure”.

The statement said the youth felt embarrassed and partly to blame. The defendant, dressed in a blouse and black trousers, sobbed throughout, with her head bowed. For Millman, Simon Hirst said his client was adamant it was no fault of the teenager.

He said: “She feels she has let a large number of people down. Her life will never be the same.

“There was no element of planning. She behaved totally inappropriately and she takes total blame.”

Mr Hirst said his client felt low self esteem at the time. Mr Millman went to work at 6.30am, until very late and she gained attention from the youth.

Mr Hirst said: “The relationship may have compensated for shortcomings in her marriage. She is remorseful and accepts full responsibility.”

Judge David Tremberg told Millman: “You were in a position of trust. You could not have failed to know that any form of amorous relationship, let alone full sexual relations with a boy 30 years your junior would have been wholly inappropriate and illegal.

“You were prepared to engage him on Facebook, by telephone and texts.

“At the time you were involved he should have been concentrating at school. He did not need to be distracted.”

He added she had “willingly” exposed herself to the boys on the internet and that the incident had harmed the boys relationship with his mother.

Following the hearing, investigating officer Detective Sergeant Stewart Watson said: “Female sex offenders should not be treated any differently. I am satisfied the court has recognised that.”

He said officers at Humberside Police safeguarding team were keen to hear from any other victims: “I would urge victims of sex offences not to be put off by the justice system. There are support mechanisms in place.”

A man identified as an employee of the Odi-Olowo Local Council Development Area, Lagos, died on Wednesday after falling off a moving lift on the eighth floor of the 12-storey building of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).

The spokesman of the Lagos State Police Command, Mr Joseph Jaiyeoba, who confirmed the incident to newsmen, said that the mangled body of the deceased was recovered from the ground floor of the building.

The victim, Fatai was said to have stepped out of the lift when the doors opened midway on the eighth floor.

Fatai assumed that the lift had reached its destination, and he stepped into the air, fell off from the eight-floor till he hit the ground.

However sources gathered that the elevators were not in proper shape.

The remains of the deceased had been deposited at the mortuary while police investigation continued into the matter.

Ninety per cent of candidates who sat for the 2011 November/December Senior School Certificate Examinations of the National Examination Council, NECO, failed the examination.

This disclosure was made by the Registrar, Prof. Promise Okpala, while announcing the release of the NECO results at a press briefing in Minna on Wednesday.
According to him, only 10 per cent out of the 110,724 candidates that sat for the examinations scored credit and above in the core subjects including English Language and Mathematics.

Credit passes in these two subjects are required for university admission in the country.
